How to Read Indian Sargam Notation

Our practice sheets use standard Indian Classical Music notation (Sargam). Use the quick reference guide below to master the symbols before starting your daily flute practice routine:

SA RE GA MA...
Equates to the standard Western notes (C D E F...)
M_ (Underline)
Komal Swara (Flat note). Lowered by a half-step.
M' (Apostrophe after)
Teevra Swara (Sharp note). Raised by a half-step.
S' (High Octave)
Notes in the higher octave (Taar Saptak).
Exercise 1 • Hand & Breath Coordination

The Fundamental Ascending & Descending Scale

Develop basic finger movements and clean pitch transitions across a single octave.

Beginner

Ascending (Aaroh):

SA - RE - GA - MA - PA - DHA - NI - S'

Descending (Avroh):

S' - NI - DHA - PA - MA - GA - RE - SA

Exercise 2 • Tonguing & Rhythm Control

Double Note Repetition Alankar

Train your tongue stroke ("Ta-Ta") and dynamic breath stability on repetitive patterns.

Beginner

Ascending (Aaroh):

SASA - RERE - GAGA - MAMA - PAPA - DHADHA - NINI - S'S'

Descending (Avroh):
